Write a letter to Seventeen regarding the article (mail@seventeen.com) telling them that this is not ok. I really suggest you read the article because it really is incredibly offensive and even compares many transgender people to perverts and drug addicts. Not okay.

a typical role for a prima ballerina... romance is always involved.

Ever since a long time ago, there had always been specific gender roles on the ballet stage. Not only has there been specific gender roles, but also specific races. The story is always a romance or a “damsel in distress” and there is a man there to save the day or take care of her. The man and woman are always white. This is no the real world!
There have been women who have tried to change this back when; ballet was put on a pedestal amongst other forms of dance. Dancers like Isadora Duncan, Ruth St. Denis, Ted Shawn, & Martha Graham had formed the world of modern dance. This is where the performances on stage did not always involve a love story. They were inspired by artwork, poetry, political endeavors, music, and other things where there did not have to be specific gender roles. The dancers and choreographers weren’t always praised for their work. Especially Isadora Duncan, “the mother of modern dance” because it was taboo for a woman to setting this new style on a stage(before the industrial revolution).
Isadora Duncan was one of the first openly public feminists in dance.
Although there was change from the ballet stage to this new form of dance, modern which I am studying here at Columbia College… I have found that television has sort of brought dance back in full circle. There is a show on television now that many people might have heard of called So You Think You Could Dance? I really enjoyed watching this show but have found many things that I dislike about the show and relate it to our conversation in class about how watching a television show and enjoying it for the longest time and then take a Women’s & Genders course in college and have a new perspective on that same television show just from what you learn in class and discuss. They partner girls & guys together during the top 20 round until it get to the final four dancers. The dances are very gender based. When I think about the pieces a lot of them tell stories that are very powerful. Last season there were dances about addiction, a woman with cancer, and a mother and her son. They were very well choreographed and danced but I also thought about if they would be just as affective to the audience’s emotions if they were done with two males or two females… They would and maybe even more. I wonder why they do this. Most of the males on the show are homosexual and a partnership with two men or two women about a love story has not happened on television. I wonder when it will be okay and acceptable to watch this?
There is a dance company in Los Angeles called CollidE, which I would like to dance for one day or form a company of my own that does the things the artistic director does on stage. She is not the typical, skinny, beautiful female dancer that would be shown on a television show like SYTCD. She recently had a show called You and Me that doesn’t display any specific gender roles and bases a lot of her pieces on the entire group. The shirt and posters for the show was stick figures of a boy and girl on a couch, two girls on a couch, and two boys on a couch. It was her entire show that never would point out the traditional love story or relationship that society is so used to. This is inspiring to me and what needs to be on stage and in the media.
I am attending school to teach dance in a college level, but eventually I would like to form my own dance company. Whether it be ballet, modern, or hip hop I would like to represent stories on stage like Erica Sobol does or like the choreographers on SYTCD but not have to have that set gender role. The woman doesn’t always have to be saved, the object of a man’s affection, or the sex symbol. I want to tell people how the world really is, but it’s still behind closed doors or at least not shown enough.

This semester I had the pleasure of opening for an event hosted by Columbia College’s ASO and Big Mouth called Native Tongues where a spoken word poetry group, which goes by the name of Yellow Rage, was the featured act. The two women (Michelle Myers and Catzie Villayphonh) come from Philadelphia and have appeared on HBO’s Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam Season 1. The two women tackle a lot of subjects in their poetry on race, sexism, and other political issues. But one specific topic that connected with me the most and I felt I could speak on was being an Asian American woman.

In a poem called I’m a Woman Not a Flava, the girls use sarcasm and humor to display there frustrations with how society and the media view an Asian American women. They cover things like how we are looked as these erotic mysterious “dragon ladies”. A line Michelle said was talking about how “imitation is the best form of flattery…” she then goes on to saying something on the lines of cultural appropriation being used as something sexual, and how the use of orientalizing pornography and other forms merchandise frustrates her. The idea of sex sells, turns into the idea of an Asian women sells.

Catzie also discusses the use of females taking chopsticks and twisting them in their hair because it’s so trendy. The continue on with this topic on how America has used aspects of the Asian women to sell as a fashion statement forgetting that is other people’s culture.

My feelings going off what this group had to say are very similar. I feel that in the media, Asian American women are portrayed as these sex kittens. If they aren’t in a movie playing some kind of fighter, they are shown as these prostitutes to some higher man. The word geisha does not mean sex, but in movies and television it is used to display a sexual women rather than a culture.

I found also that this poem hits so close to me, because this is something I will never forget for the rest of my life… when I was walking down College Ave. at Rutgers University toward my car, these two white men where standing outside smoking a cigarette and asked me if I was lost. They then continued on with inviting me to the party they were at and pointed out that I was Asian and went on to saying that they’ve never had that flavor before. I then flipped out on him and told him that this wasn’t Baskin Robins.

It’s just annoying to me how Asians in general are portrayed in the media as things like if you are a male, a nerd or some kung-fu master and a women is portrayed as this sexy dragon lady. I was at an Asian American conference this semester where I went to an artists panel discussing Asian American artists and their role in the media. It’s sad how there hasn’t really been any Asian American in the music industry that hasn’t made it in the United States. When someone had asked the two artists that were there answering questions, one of them (Manny Garcia) had answered on the lines as when it does happen it will most likely be an Asian American women because of the whole “sex sells” influence.

I can’t wait for the day that we Asian American women are looked at in society as something they are. Smart, talented, and cultured not just one thing… all of this doesn’t just go with us but I’m sure applies to other women in a different race.

For our project a Facebook group was created to promote the blog and get as many readers as we possibly could. It was originally entitled “Equal Writes” but we changed our blog name to “Feminist Loud Mouths,” a name that doesn’t hide from the F word but acknowledges what we stand for which is the equality between sexes.

fem·i·nism Pronunciation: \ˈfe-mə-ˌni-zəm\

Function: noun

Date: 1895

the theory of the political, economic, and social equality of the sexes

After the name change a number of people wrote on the group’s page voicing dislike for the new name, one woman even posted, “Sorry buddy, but I just can’t stay in a group called ‘Feminist Loudmouths’ with a clean conscience. I liked the ‘Equal Writes’ though.” A clear conscience? Well, I guess I can’t hide behind a different name with a clear conscience either. By putting the word feminist in our title we are not holding back. And read our posts, they are nothing radical. They are asking for equality, not a call for the exclusion of men from the constitution or anything (but from the sounds of the posts on the Facebook page you would think we were calling for something of that sort).

Through just this little Facebook group, it is apparent that fear and backlash of the word “feminism” runs deep. The woman who posted went so far as to say it went against her conscience. Feminists cannot hide behind other words that have more mass appeal. We are feminists, and we want equal rights. This does not make us radical or extreme, this makes us brave and bold and shows that we stand up for what we believe in. I would love to be able to call myself a humanist, but that would mean that men and women are equal in society and that is simply not true. What we believe in is feminism, total equality for both sexes.

Well… the photo may say it all. One observation that I’ve been making most of my life is that when it comes to labor related jobs, construction especially, the field is male dominated. It’s a pretty accepted part of out culture to simply think of construction workers as all men. Not to mention that most every construction worker that I do see in real life is indeed a man. I have on the rare occasion actually seen female construction workers on building sites, but all I’ve seen them do is hold up a sign blocking the road, or re-routing traffic. I’ve never seen them in any labor-intensive positions. I think that a large portion of this fact is part of gender. While it is possible for women to carry out construction work, it isn’t socially viewed as the same. The cultural expectation of a woman’s physique isn’t necessarily a body made for construction, so while its quite possible for a woman to have a sturdy body capable of these labors, it isn’t seen too well socially. Not to mention that even if a woman should reach the construction site, she will quite possibly be treated differently. I’ve spoken to a female carpenter who works in construction building houses and offices. She actually has a very hard time getting respect and even polite behavior from her male co-workers. So the main problem has very little to do with being able to handle the work, it’s that women aren’t encouraged to handle this type of work, and are subject to social problems if they do. In order to see less of this sign, expectations will have to change.

Earlier this week I was speaking to my girlfriend’s little sister, and she told me she going into track and field. I actually thought it was a pretty cool idea, lots of exercises, competition etc. Then I asked how she was able to join so late in the year, and she told me that it was a no cut team that didn’t require attendance to any number of practices. This was a little strange to me, she is going to the same high school that I went to, and when I was there, my brother did track. In his days on the boys track team he was expected to be there every time, and I saw a lot of boys get cut from the team. It makes me think about the standards of sports for girls and boys, which leads me to a hypothesis; that perhaps a large reason that girls supposedly never reach the same athletic capacity as many boys is the standard of training and competition. While boys can play baseball, girls play softball and so on. The bar is dramatically lowered for girls. We also have the obvious social restrictions that dictate how a woman should be physically, but these sports merely contribute to that. In the little leagues, girls are allowed to compete as well until a certain age, when they either can’t play at all or a separate team is made. While the boys’ team continues their hard training and competition, the girls’ team assumes they can’t handle that and lowers the bar. Its just adding to segregation between the sexes, and it is from this gap that inequality continues to grow.

I was wandering about the Internet earlier when I stumbled upon a you tube video talking about a new documentary known as “Oral Sex is the New goodnight Kiss.” The video was of two reporters sitting at a desk and discussing it, the first reporter talked about a new wave a sex scandal going on with women as young as 11, and how something called casual prostitution has become prominent in high schools and middles schools. Apparently many young suburban girls use sex and stripping to get anything from money to homework. The reporter goes on to talk about a large amount of sex parties that propagate these practices, while the other, sadly missing the point completely, simply complains about not having these kinds of things when he was a young boy. Aside from the second reporter’s offensive behavior, the video made me investigate further into the matter. I found an actual news report by ABC about the documentary as well as the issue. Their analysis was a little bit more in depth; they state that the documentary shows a growing cultural shift in values toward casual oral sex and casual prostitution. They state that the girls doing these things are usually middle to upper class suburban girls, and that they are participating in these acts much more often than the public would suspect. The report tells us an awful lot about what the girls are doing and how the girls are misled, but one thing that irks me is that they skip the entire issue of the boys and men involved in these circles. Certainly it may not be an issue for young male prostitution, but there are boys at these same young ages offering money and services in exchange for sexual favors. The report seems to miss the whole situation and kind of puts all spotlight and blame on the young girls. Not to say that the girls are strictly victims, but they don’t include all propagators of these new beliefs and practices. In order to see the situation and argument fully, I will have to go out and watch the full documentary, but from what I’ve seen the situation is rather intense.

This is a much bigger reflection and scary sign of a failing economy then less shoppers on Black Friday. Low income women in at least 20 states are being turned away or put on lengthy waiting lists for free cancer screenings, according the American Cancer Society’s Cancer Action Network. New York used to screen women of any age but now limit their free mammograms to 50 years old and up, even with women with strong family history of breast cancer. The Cancer Society estimates that 34,600 women between 40 and 49 will have breast cancer every year nationwide.

“I already know there are women who are dying whose lives we could have saved with mammography and other detections,” said Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer for the society. “This is rationing of health care by offering (screenings) only in the first half of the fiscal year, or by cutting back on those programs. It’s rationing that is leading to people dying.”
